On Ash Wednesday, Mother Kae and Deacon Buddy collaborated with Northglenn UCC's Pastor Jack to offer "Ashes on the Way" to work at the RTD terminal and EB Rains Park. Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence. From the Middle Ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross. The reminder that “we are dust and to dust we shall return” turns our attention to the creative power of God, and God’s ability to heal the brokenness in our lives when we humbly offer that brokenness to God. Historically, ashes signified purification and sorrow for sins. Ashes are a plea to God for mercy and compassion, pardon and forgiveness. Turning to God is the work of Lent, in preparation for the celebration of Easter.
